Satellite project discovers ground water in Sharjah

[Source: UAE Interact ]

Ground water in Sharjah has been found through a satellite project and further points will be excavated to sustain residents' needs, a renowned scientist said yesterday. Dr Farouk Al Baz, research professor and director of the Centre for Remote Sensing, Boston University, USA, told Gulf News the research project is crucial in preparing for a long-term strategic plan for the rational use of ground water resources.

"Through our studies we have found ground water in Sharjah and the northern emirates. We found the points where ground water exists, and more wells will be pushed for as the need arises," said Al Baz.

Al Baz previously worked with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Speaking on the sidelines of the American University of Sharjah's Engineering Open Day, he said the research team will continue to conduct further investigations to sustain the needs of residents.

"We continue to receive satellite Images and are supplying the government of Sharjah with regular updates of sites for drilling ground water, [by using the Geographical Information System]," he added. The research project for exploring ground water by using space Images was launched five years ago under the directions of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. Headed by Al Baz, it was conducted with the cooperation of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority. (Gulf News)
